Beyond the Classrooms - UX Research Project

Thomas Jefferson University is situated in the heart of Philadelphia, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs for both national and international students. Beyond the classrooms is a project where we worked upon the problem of student's not experiencing city life along with academic life with the office of

student engagement at TJU. The concern stemmed from the belief that university students were not fully immersed in the vibrant city life while balancing their academic responsibilities. This research project aimed to gain a profound understanding of the students' perspectives to thoroughly investigate the core of this issue.

Problem Statement

TJU's head of student engagement worries that students aren't fully experiencing the city of Philadelphia.

The issue is two-fold: engaging current students in the city and effectively promoting this aspect to prospective students.

How might we encourage users to track their calorie intake to improve their food habits, enhance physical health, and achieve their desired weight goals.

Reflections

• This project emphasized the importance of maintaining unwavering objectivity throughout user research. As a student, it was a challenge to set aside my own experiences and prioritize understanding the diverse challenges faced by the target users.

Presenting findings in a compelling narrative format proved highly effective. The storytelling approachresonated with stakeholders, facilitating their comprehension of our insights and the validity of our proposed next steps.

Conveying optimism during sensitive interviews emerged as a valuable skill. It helped me navigate potentially uncomfortable topics while fostering open communication and eliciting richer information from users. The ability to adapt and refine interview questions on the fly also proved essential in maximizing data collection.

• Looking forward, I would concentrate on meticulous interview script development. This includes crafting questions that anticipate user responses while leaving room for dynamic adjustments and reordering based on individual interview dynamics.
